In February, Artformz Alternative presents the exhibition “Faith, Fear, and Fortune”, which features the works of two renowned artists: PJ Mills (large-format photography) and Ramon Williams (sculptural objects & photography).

Religion and faith are the subjects of lectures, books, artwork, and architectural monuments.  In the gallery’s February show, artists Mills (Irish-American) and Williams (Cuban-American) exhibit haunting interpretations of this theme, which flows pervasively throughout much of each artist’s work. The imagery and objects are observations on the condition of contemporary society, filtered through each artist’s ethnic experience, leading to the creation of each one’s visual vocabulary. Mills sees religions as “predominately mechanisms for family/social control,” and Williams, as “instruments of faith,” to help “look forward beyond that existence of fear and solitude.” Even as the resulting works follow personal and private interpretations on the theme, and are separate stories, they are not - as evidenced in the collaborative installation “One Question, One Answer” on exhibit in the project room. The artists invite visitors to enter - one by one - where they may find, as Williams states: “the chance of grasping the meaning in the actual frailness of the merchandise and its hopeful consumer.”

In March, the original artists from the “Giants in the City” Miami 2008 Premier Exhibit - will present their sketches and designs, on paper and other media, which led to each artist’s final design and inflatable sculpture for the acclaimed exhibit. Artists will also show selected pieces from their own body of work, strengthening the historical significance of this grand experiment. The exercise was brought to life through charming doodles, complex scale models, and poetic renderings: all demonstrating the intellectual flow from thought, to paper, to reality.

Participating artists: Gustavo Acosta, Jose Bedia, Tomas Esson, Frank Hyder, Anja Marais, John Martini, Alejandro Mendoza, Angel Ricardo Rios, Alette Simmons-Jimenez, Michelle Weinberg
